Dove never fails to put a smile on my face with their campaigns but this one in particular brought a tear to my eye. We always tell little girls to love themselves and embrace their natural beauty but are we setting the example? This campaign video does an EXCELLENT job displaying that!
Girls are seven times more likely to love their curls if people around them do!
This hits home (of course) because women of color particularly are not a fan of their natural hair. Personally, for years, my hair almost defined me! I was known for my fierce short cuts and always switching up the color. When I decided to do the “big chop” and rock my natural hair a year ago it was liberating but the journey after the chop was excruciating. I was so uncomfortable, I felt exposed, ugly, young (and not in a good way), and the list continues. It was seeing other women rocking their tiny afros, bald heads, twist outs, and big hair that comforted me. They were sooo gorgeous to me! And it helped build my confidence and feel I was gorgeous too.
Now don’t get me wrong, I love my braids and my wigs, but only if I feel like rocking that style. I learn have learned to embrace my natural hair and love it! I know the babies are watching and it’s up to us to set the example. Rock those curls girl!!
